Born in Hong Kong in 1946, Mathew Chan’s life took one of its many remarkable turns when, at the age of fifteen, he was sent to boarding school in Albury. This early leap into a new world would be the first of many adventures that shaped his character, resilience, and vision.
Mathew is deeply proud of the loving family he has built — his son Adam; his daughter Sam and her husband Will, and their daughter Mia; his daughter Natalie and her husband Chris, and their children Jarrah and Chloe; and his son Derek and his wife Linda, and their children Ethan and Sophia. His greatest joy comes from being “Pa” to his five wonderful grandchildren, who fill his days with laughter, love, and boundless pride.
From humble beginnings, Mathew went on to become one of the most recognisable names in our dining community. For more than 45 years at the helm of Peacock Gardens, he has welcomed generations of guests, turning each visit into an occasion to remember. His achievements include being inducted into the Restaurant & Catering Australia Hall of Fame in 2019 and pioneering the introduction of fortune cookies to Australia — a fitting symbol of the joy, surprise, and delight he has always sought to bring to others.
As Mathew embarks on his next chapter, he looks forward to more time with family, cherished friendships, and the adventures still to come — carrying with him the same warmth, generosity, and spirit that have made his journey so extraordinary.
